About Mountaineer Stone

Founded in 1998 by James A. Asbury, Mountaineer Stone was born out of James' realization of a love for stone and dry stonemasonry. Having taken a job stacking stone in his spare time while attending college, Asbury soon realized his knack for all things stone and began accepting requests for dry construction projects.
"The first projects were small: only a few tons of stone were needed," says Asbury. But the business soon grew: "by the end of our second year, I had a crew of men working with me and found myself building structures that required entire truckloads of stone." James fondly recalls one large project from this time that was particularly rewarding. This structure, a series of stone retaining walls in Northern Pennsylvania, used over 30 tractor-trailer loads of stone to create terraced lawns and flower beds in a section of land that, previously, was too steep for practical use.
Since its humble beginnings, Mountaineer Stone has grown to become a constant presence in the local and regional stone industry. With projects spanning the eastern United States–from the Finger Lakes of upstate New York to Kentucky's Bluegrass landscape–Mountaineer Stone is constantly expanding its reach with aspirations of national prominence.
Assisted by his wife, Christina, and an expanding network of labor and support staff, Asbury provides not only quality stone, but also the expertise and artisanship to create beautiful and long-lasting structures that enhance an area's inherent beauty while adding to its value. Whenever possible, Asbury tries to supplement his workforce with local youths who, like those at Mountaineer Stone, enjoy the natural and historical beauty of stone and dry stonemasonry.
With each new project that Mountaineer Stone encounters, there is a certain excitement that exists. Creating a form, oftentimes an intricate structure, out of such a seemingly simple, common material as stone is a unique, aesthetic experience in itself. We treat each job, regardless of its size or scope, as a chance to fuse the natural with the constructed, the simple with the complex, and nature with our desire to nurture the landscape. At Mountaineer Stone, stone is our passion.
