Why The Dry Stone Conservancy?

Over the past year I’ve learned a lot about the fine points of the stone craft through the Dry Stone Conservancy (DSC) of Lexington, Kentucky. I originally found them mentioned in a book I picked up in Vermont. After contacting them, I signed up for a workshop in Shelby County. The instructor, Neil Rippingale (a waller from Scotland), gave two days of instruction to a class of stone buffs ranging from landscapers, masons, engineers, and novices.

Neil’s good humor, and the well-structured class, made the day pass by quickly. We rebuilt stints of wall located at the Jefferson Community College. Part of the mission of the DSC is to preserve dry stone work, or rock fence as it is called in that area. Rock fence stood all over the Kentucky countryside. Maintaining the structures is a way the DSC preserves and remembers the agricultural history of Kentucky.

Last Spring I also attended a DSC walling contest in Lexington, Kentucky. The contest was a simple takedown and rebuild of an existing stone structure. Each person chose categories that met his/her skill level. Participants were judged on many aspects of taking down, and rebuilding a dry stone structure. Contestants came from many walling backgrounds and areas.

The Dry Stone Conservancy is a not for profit group. Their goal is to advance and maintain the art and craft of dry stonework. They also offer a certification program for those who wish to take their trade to another level. I recommend calling the DSC and finding out how they can help you with your stone interest.
