Tribute to Knowledge

I am very proud of the education I received from the Pennsylvania College of Technology. My time there, studying Business Management, was especially rewarding because I was studying it around others who were learning diverse skills and concepts that they intended to apply professionally within the trades. There were peers studying architecture, transportation technology, engineering, information technology, health sciences, construction, and many more, all with the common goal of keeping our hands, and workmanship, in our professions.

I was very excited when, in early 2006, the college contacted me about leading a student-aided project to create a unique dry stone structure. Our project was a specific, and rather uncommon, type of dry stone loop. The concept was first seen in StoneXus Magazine; it was conceived and constructed by John Shaw-Rimmington of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Canada. John and I have talked about the project and I was very glad that he was happy to let us adapt his design. This Loop has been described by some observers as a “hot wheels track of stone.”
The structure sits near the Earth Science Center on Rte. 15, just south of Williamsport, PA. I am very proud of the students who happily assisted with this job even though they had little or no previous dry stone experience. Most of those who helped were students of masonry and landscaping, and we appreciated everyone’s assistance. This last generation of trade professionals is rapidly aging, and it’s good to know that the next generation who will take those trade jobs is as confident as the one that came before them.

One goal of this project was to bring students of different fields together for educational enrichment. During upcoming projects, I hope that this can continue and that more individuals can become involved. In June, I was honored when I was contacted by the Alumni Association and informed that I had been selected to receive the Alumni Achievement Award. I am grateful to the college for the opportunity to build this structure, and I look forward to the possibility of continuing collaborations with Penn College, craftsmen, trade students, and others interested in the trades and stone craft.
